Charles Horse is Sawyer Trout's closest friend. He is shy, anxious, lacks self confidence and tends towards insecurity, especially around people he doesn't know very well. But around the people he's comfortable with, he can be caring and level headed. He is currently in high school alongside Sawyer.
He is particularly insecure about what visually separates him from his more "normal" peers. For one, at the age of 16, he is currently over seven feet tall. The the perpetual grin on his face has been there since even before he and Sawyer met - it takes a lot of effort for him to even temporarily stop smiling.
Charles and his family grew up on a farm. Mostly. When he was around five, his mother would bring him to the farmer's market and that's where he met Sawyer. Their moms became friends, so Charles and Sawyer hung out often. To Charles, Sawyer was cool. Then, they went to middle school together. Charles was picked on for standing out and "looking weird". Sawyer tried to stand up for Charles, but could only do so much. Even then, Sawyer became cooler. And they stuck together to this very day.
The drawing of Charles on the left here is somewhat outdated - his ears are not pointed, and his skin is more pink. A more up-to-date dpeiction of him can be seen below. Note that the shirt is not outdated; I just don't have a specific pattern for his long-sleeved shirt and as such anyone who draws him can give that shirt any pattern they want. Go ham!
